  Worker exposures to carbon (7440440) dust and organic vapors were surveyed on March 9 to 11, 1981 at the Cincinnati Water Treatment Station (SIC-4941) in Cincinnati, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by the City Health and Safety Director on behalf of five employees involved in the carbon regeneration process. Area and personal breathing zone samples were collected along with bulk samples. Noise levels also were measured. Exposures to respirable carbon dust ranged from 0.06 to 0.29 milligram per cubic meter (mg/cu m), well below the OSHA standard of 5mg/cu m for an 8 hour day. No organic vapors were detected. The greatest noise level measured was 84.4 decibels relative to the A-weighted scale (dBA), below the OSHA limit of 90dBA for an 8 hour workday. The author concludes that no health hazards exist at this facility. The continued use of respirators is recommended along with soundproofing of the enclosed operator's booth if the facility is expanded to full scale operation.
