  Exposures to polychlorinated-biphenyls (1336363) (PCB) were surveyed at Our Lady of Visitation Elementary School (SIC-8210) in Cincinnati, Ohio, on March 19 and 26, 1981. The evaluation was requested by the Health Commissioner of Hamilton County after a capacitor containing PCB fluid in a unit heater of the building overheated. Area and wipe samples were collected for analysis. PCB was not detected in any of the air samples. Wipe samples taken from the room containing the overheated capacitor had PCB concentrations ranging up to 7,200 micrograms per 100 square centimeters. No dibenzodioxins or dibenzofurans were found. Wipe samples from other areas in the school contained only background PCB concentrations. The authors recommend that PCB contamination in the room with the overheated capacitor be reduced to background concentrations. They also note that the exposed children will be examined for any PCB exposure effects.
