Description:The cause of health symptoms associated with an odor was investigated on June 12 and 13, July 2 and 3, and September 3, 1980 at the Department of Social Services Building (SIC-9200) in Holland, Michigan. The evaluation was requested by the Michigan Department of Public Health to investigate the cause of complaints of fatigue, headache, and eye irritation among the 80 employees. Air samples were analyzed for carbon-monoxide (630080) and ozone (10028156), humidity and ventilation measurements were taken, and soil and water samples were tested for metals, bacteria, and fungi. Workers were questioned about work related health symptoms. The results of an environmental and medical survey conducted by the Michigan Department of Health also were reviewed. No specific agent or agents were identified in the building. No exposures or work conditions associated with long term adverse health effects were found. The authors recommend modifications to the heating and ventilation systems, and restriction or prohibition of cigarette smoking. [Description provided by NIOSH]
