  Environmental air and bulk samples were analyzed for formaldehyde (50000), acetaldehyde (75070), propionaldehyde (123386), n- butyraldehyde (123728), n-valeraldehyde, and styrene (100425), at the Lab Crest Scientific Glass Company (SIC-3231), in Warminster Pennsylvania, on March 31, 1981. The evaluation was requested by management on behalf of an unspecified number of workers. Formaldehyde air concentrations ranged from 510 to 780 micrograms per cubic meter (micrograms/cu m), compared with the OSHA standard of 3600 micrograms/cu m. Samples for acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, n-butyraldehyde, and n-valeraldehyde were less than their respective limits of detection. All styrene samples were less than the limit of detection. The author concludes that a health hazard from styrene exposure did not exist at this facility. He recommends that engineering controls and stringent work practices be employed to reduce occupational exposures to formaldehyde to the lowest feasible limit.
