  Personal air samples were analyzed for plastic decomposition products at the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (SIC- 8922) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1981. The evaluation was requested by management on behalf of approximately two affected workers. Formaldehyde (50000) concentrations ranged from 0.46 to standard of 3.6mg/cu m. All other aldehydes were below the analytical limit of detection. Toluene (108883) concentrations ranged from 1.94 to 3.87mg/cu m, below the OSHA standard of 750mg/cu m. All other substances were minimal and could not be positively identified due to interferences. The authors conclude that no health hazards from toluene exposure exist at this facility. In order to reduce formaldehyde exposures to the lowest feasible limit, the authors recommend redesign of the exhaust ventilation system of the baking oven.
