Description:Environmental air samples were analyzed for xylene (1330207), isopropanol (67630), ethanol (64175), and formaldehyde (50000), at the McKeesport Hospital (SIC-8062) in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, on February 24, 1981. The evaluation was requested by management for an unspecified number of workers. Ethanol concentrations ranged from 2.5 to 14.4 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m), compared with the OSHA standard of 1900mg/cu m. Isopropanol concentrations were in the 0.3 to 4.5mg/cu m range, compared with the OSHA standard of 980mg/cu m. Samples for xylene ranged from 2.3 to 52.8mg/cu m, below the OSHA standard of 435mg/cu m. Formaldehyde concentrations ranged from 2.3 to 2.8mg/cu m compared with the OSHA standard of 3.6mg/cu m. The author recommends maintenance of ventilation systems, proper waste disposal of contaminated materials, improved exhaust ventilation, medical surveillance of all workers exposed to formaldehyde, and other measures to reduce employee exposures to formaldehyde.
