Description:Environmental air samples, wipe samples, and vacuum samples were analyzed for potassium-dichromate (7778509) at an artist's workshop (SIC-7332) in Bucyrus, Ohio, on February 9 and 10, 1981. The artist requested the evaluation after reporting mucous membrane irritation, burning and itching of her arms, face, and hands, facial and finger edema, and other adverse health effects. Wipe samples indicated lingering contamination of potassium-dichromate in several areas of the workshop. Chromium-VI (18540299) concentrations in environmental air samples, vacuum samples, and bulk samples were below the limits of detection for chromium VI. The NIOSH standard for potassium-dichromate is 25 micrograms per cubic meter. The author concludes that a health hazard from potassium-dichromate existed, and that the artist's symptoms were consistent with the known primary irritant and sensitization effects of potassium- dichromate. He recommends discontinuing the use of potassium- dichromate as a fixer, decontaminating the workshop, washing all treated fabrics, and consulting medical specialists if symptoms persist.
