Description:Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed for N- nitrosamines, oxides of nitrogen, carbon-disulfide (75150), styrene (100425), isopropyl-alcohol (67630), and other volatile organic compounds at the St. Clair Rubber Company (SIC-2822) in Maryville, Michigan, on November 19 to 20, 1979, and June 12, 1980. A representative of the United Rubber Workers of America, Local 47, requested the evaluation on behalf of approximately 30 workers. Medical interviews were also conducted with 16 employees. Environmental air samples contained N-nitrosodimethylamine (62759) (NDMA) concentrations ranging from 0.12 to 0.17 microgram per cubic meter, N-nitrosomorpholine (59892) (NMOR) concentrations ranging from 1.1 to 2.4 micrograms per cubic meter, and N- nitrosodiethylamine (55185) at a concentration of 0.14 microgram per cubic meter. In personal samples, NDMA and NMOR concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.15 and 0.19 to 0.98 micrograms per cubic meter, respectively. No standards exist for exposure to these nitrosamines. Significant concentrations of other organic compounds were not detected. No health effects associated with N-nitrosamine exposure were noted during the medical interviews. The authors conclude that N-nitrosamine concentrations were low at this facility but advise further reductions in exposure in view of the potential carcinogenicity of N-nitrosamines. They recommend increasing the ventilation capacity in exposure areas and modifying the chemical processing procedures to reduce the formation of N- nitrosamines.
