Description:

Breathing zone air samples were analyzed for 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556) at the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation (SIC-3310) in West Leechburg, Pennsylvania on March 6, 1981. A representative of the United Steelworkers of America, Local 1138, requested the evaluation on behalf of approximately 35 workers. Medical interviews were also conducted with 15 workers. Air measurements were limited to degreaser operations, and 1,1,1-trichloroethane air concentrations ranged from 50 to 200 parts per million (ppm), compared with the OSHA limit of 350ppm for an 8 hour period. Five workers reported periodic dry skin. No other work related health effects were reported. The author concludes that no health hazard exists at this facility from airborne exposure to 1,1,1-trichloroethane. He recommends the use of air line respirators when using 1,1,1- trichloroethane in confined spaces, and a review of the existing worker safety program at this facility.
