  Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed for chromium (7440473) at Fansteel Electrometals, Incorporated (SIC-3471) in North Chicago, Illinois on April 7, 1981. A representative of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local 1777, requested the evaluation on behalf of 11 workers. The Local exhaust ventilation system was evaluated. All samples for chromium were below the limit of detection or substantially below the OSHA standard of 1 milligram per cubic meter for metallic chromium. The local exhaust ventilation system operated efficiently. The author concludes that a health hazard from exposure to chromium does not exist at this facility. Recommendations to minimize contact with chromium powder are listed, including the use of personal protective equipment, good personal hygienic practices, proper storage of work clothes, smoking, eating and drinking restrictions, proper maintenance of all ventilation units, and the implementation of medical surveillance and health and safety programs.
