Description:Breathing zone and environmental air samples were analyzed for calcium-oxide (1305788) at the CF and I Steel Corporation (SIC-3315) in Pueblo, Colorado, on March 18, 1981. A representative of the United Steelworkers of America, Local 2102, requested the evaluation on behalf of an unspecified number of workers. Calcium-oxide concentrations ranged from 0.8 to 5.8 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cum), compared with the OSHA standard of 5.0mg/cum. Interviews with workers revealed that the only consistent complaint was irritation of the nose and throat. The author concludes that a potential health hazard exists from exposure to calcium-oxide. They recommend the prohibition of eating, drinking and smoking in the work area, good personal hygiene, periodic medical examination for all affected workers, and continuance of dust vacuuming practices
