Description:Health and safety practices for entry into manholes were evaluated at the Bergen County Utilities Authority (SIC-4952) in Little Ferry, New Jersey, during October, 1980. A representative of the Utility Workers Union of American, Local 534, requested the evaluation on behalf of approximately 30 workers. General work processes were reviewed and compared with recommended practices. The author concludes that the evaluated procedures for entry into and working in confined spaces generally conformed to NIOSH criteria. He recommends clarification of certain instructions, inclusion of operating instructions with gas monitors, better characterization of the contaminants present in the sewers, initiation of an air monitoring program, increased ventilation at work sites, employee training, and other measures to reduce worker hazards.
