Description:Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed for toluene (108883), xylene (1330207), methyl-isobutyl-ketone (108101) (MIBK), acetone (67641), isopropanol (67630), and trimethyl-benzene (25551137) at the Anchor Hocking Corporation (SIC-2750), in Chester, West Virginia. An unidentified worker requested the evaluation after experiencing adverse health effects. The 8-hour time weighed exposure to trimethyl-benzene was 29 parts per million (ppm), compared with the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists recommended threshold limit value of 25ppm. Acetone, isopropanol, MIBK, toluene, and xylene concentrations were well below the respective OSHA standards or 1000, 400, 100, 200, and 100ppm. Symptoms of headache, light headedness, eye tearing and redness, throat irritation and exhaustion were reported by the affected worker. The authors conclude that a hazard from overexposure to combined screen printing contaminants, especially trimethyl-benzene, did exist. They recommend engineering controls to reduce exposures, medical and environmental monitoring, and substitution of trimethyl-benzene with a product containing fewer toxic components.
