Description:Environmental air samples were analyzed for formaldehyde (50000) vapors in two buildings owned by the National Park Service (SIC- 9512) in Patchogue, New York, on February 27, 1981. A representative of the United Stated Department of the Interior requested the evaluation on behalf of an unidentified number of park rangers and their families. Formaldehyde concentrations in the first house ranged from 0.07 to 0.09 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cum). The second house contained formaldehyde concentrations ranging from 0.09 to 0.19 mg/cum. The OSHA recommended standard is 4.5mg/cum for an 8 hour time weighted average. The author concludes that since formaldehyde has been implicated as a possible carcinogen, exposures should be kept at a minimum. He recommends that the houses be only used during the summer when natural ventilation can be used, removal of the urea formaldehyde insulation, and modifications in the houses to prevent formaldehyde vapors from leaking into the living areas.
