• Description:
  A follow-up medical survey on respiratory disorders was conducted at the FMC Corporation (SIC-2819) in Nitro, West Virginia, on May 20 to 22, 1981. A representative of the United Steelworkers of America requested the evaluation on behalf of 37 workers exposed to phosphorus-trichloride (7719122), and phosphorous-oxychloride (10025873). Twenty-six exposed and 11 unexposed workers from an original study conducted 2 years earlier were reexamined. Half of the exposed workers reported intermittent respiratory distress, compared with none of the exposed workers. No significant decrements in pulmonary function since the previous study could be demonstrated in the exposed workers. The author recommended the continuation of the company respiratory protection program and worker education.
