Description:Environmental and personal breathing zone air samples were analyzed for Chromium-VI (18540299), total chromium (7440473), and sulfuric- acid (7664939) at Valley Chrome Platers (SIC-3471), in Bay City, Michigan, on January 19 to 21, 1981. Ventilation and noise measurements were also obtained and medical questionnaires were administered to six workers. An unidentified employee requested the evaluation on behalf of six employees. Chromium-VI concentrations ranged from 0.003 to 0.006 milligram per cubic meter (mg/cum), compared with the OSHA standard of 0.1mg/cum. Total chromium exposures ranged from 0.009 to 0.81mg/cum, compared with the OSHA standard of 0.5mg/cu m. Concentrations of sulfuric-acid ranged from Ventilation rates of the local exhaust system were low. No excessive noise levels were found. No complaints of chronic respiratory infections or histories of ulcerated or perforated nasal septa were reported by workers. No other manifestations or permanent injuries associated with chromium or other elements were reported. Investigation of reported cardiovascular disorders revealed contributing hereditary and personal factors, none of which could be considered a result of workplace exposure. The authors conclude that a health hazard from plating chemicals did not exist at this facility. They recommend increasing the ventilation airflow, installation of an emergency shower, use of personal protective equipment, prohibition of eating, drinking and smoking in the plating area, relocation of the chemical storage area, cleaning of the eating area, and the provision of a collection receptacle for soiled uniforms.
