Description:Health precautions utilized while investigating wildlife loss were evaluated at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Basin-F (SIC-0971), in Commerce City, Colorado, on July 10, 1981. The evaluation was requested by employees after an unspecified number of workers reported adverse health reactions upon picking up sick or dead ducks. Previous analysis of the pond water indicated contamination by diisopropyl-methyl-phosphonate (1445756), endrin (72208), aldrin (309002), dieldrin (60571), dicyclopentadiene (77736), bicycloheptadiene, diethyl-benzene (25340174), dimethyl-disulfide (624920), methyl-acetate (79209), methyl-isobutyl-ketone (108101), toluene (108883), sodium (7440235), chloride (7782505), arsenic (7440382), potassium (7440097), fluoride (7782414), copper (7440508), and chromium (7440473). The authors conclude that a health hazard exists for wildlife personnel monitoring Basin-F from exposure to dicyclopentadiene. They recommend the elimination of jobs requiring contact with the pond if practical performing the job in the morning, use of personal protective equipment, and the use of organic cartridge respirators.
