Description:Workers exposures to carbon-black (1333864) (CB), carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO), and welding fumes were surveyed on December 17 and 18, 1980 at Phillips Petroleum Company (SIC-2895) in Toledo, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by representatives of the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers Union, Local 7-346, on behalf of 33 production workers. Bulk and air samples were collected for analysis. Workers were tested for pulmonary function and carboxyhemoglobin and completed symptom questionnaires. CB concentrations were below the OSHA standard of 3.5 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cum), however concentrations of cyclohexane extractables exceeded the 0.1mg/cum NIOSH recommended limit. CO and iron-oxide (1309371) fume concentrations generally were within the OSHA standards of 50 parts per million and 10mg/cu m, respectively. Pulmonary functions tests and carboxyhemoglobin values were normal. Workers frequently reported nose irritation and shortness of breath. The authors conclude that an exposure hazard exists from CB containing polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNA). Recommendations are included to reduce CB/PNA concentrations, increase ventilation, provide medical surveillance of workers exposed to CB, and provide CO sensors for workers near the baghouse and on the third level gantry.
