Description:Workers exposures to radiofrequency (RF) radiation were surveyed on December 8, 1980 at Apollo Manufacturing Company (SIC-3079) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The evaluation was requested by the Michigan Department of Health on behalf of approximately 24 dielectric heat sealer operators. Electric and magnetic field strengths were measured for 12 RF heat sealers. Five of the units exceeded the OSHA RF microwave exposure standard of 10 milliwatts per square centimeter. Four units exceeded the 40,000 square volt per square meter standard for electric field strength, and two exceeded the strength; one of these six units exceeded both standards. The author concludes that workers at this company are exposed to radiation hazard. Recommendations are included for installation of shielding and testing the other heat sealers at the company.
