Description:Complaints of musculoskeletal system disorders were investigated on August 25, 1980, among workers at Dart Industries, Incorporated (SIC- 2841) in Jerome, Idaho. The investigation was requested by the Idaho Area Office of OSHA on behalf of an unspecified number of workers. Job operations were observed, and photographs were taken for ergonomic evaluation. Interviews with the management revealed that several job redesign changes had been implemented in 1978 in an effort to reduce worker complaints of muscle soreness and weakness. The general workplace areas were clean, well lit, quiet, and thermally comfortable. Ergonomic design in the molding operations area was adequate, however, several problems were identified in the packaging operations area, including excessive reach distances, finger extension, and wrist hyperflexion. The author concludes that musculoskeletal system complaints among packing operations workers are due to job design deficiencies and to the repetitive nature of the work. Recommendations are made to evaluate packing operations ergonomics and to monitor musculoskeletal complaints among the workers.
