Description:Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed for methylene- chloride (75092), 2-butanone (78933), toluene (108883), and xylene (1330207) at a roof installation work site in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 23 to 25, 1981. A representative of the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers, in Baltimore, Maryland, requested the evaluation. Exposures to airborne vapors of methylene-chloride ranged from none to 31.1 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/Cum), compared with the OSHA standard of 1750 mg/Cum. 2- Butanone concentrations ranged from none detected to 17.6 mg/Cum, compared with the OSHA standard of 590 mg/Cum. Toluene concentrations were in the range of 2.8 to 16.6 mg/Cum, below the OSHA standard of 750 mg/Cum. Xylene concentrations were also below the OSHA standard of 435 mg/Cum, ranging from none to 1.3 mg/Cum. The author concludes that a health hazard from solvent vapors did not exist at this construction site. He recommends that workers try to maintain an upwind attitude when applying roofing adhesive, or heat-sealing edges of the roofing sheets, avoiding skin contact with the adhesives, use of respirators when working in confined spaces, and worker education.
