Health Hazard Evaluation Report: HETA-81-302-1014: Garner-Denver Company; Commerce City, Colorado

  Audiometric testing was conducted to determine if workers were exposed to excessive noise levels at the Gardner Denver Company (SIC- 3462) in Commerce City, Colorado, on September 19 and 26, 1981. A representative of the United Steelworkers of America requested the evaluation on behalf of 26 workers in the drop forge shop of the Gardner Denver Company. Thirteen of the 26 workers took part in the testing. All of these workers had significant hearing loss, and 12 of the 13 tested workers exhibited hearing loss consistent with a history of noise exposure. The severity of hearing loss for eight workers was such that their ability to understand conversational speech was impaired. The authors conclude that a health hazard from excessive noise levels at this facility probably existed. They recommend that a hearing protection program be instituted if the drop forge reopens, that audiometric examination results be included in the workers medical records, and that the affected workers undergo yearly audiometric testing.
