Description:Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed for methylene- chloride (75092), hydrogen-chloride (7647010), sodium-hydroxide (1310732), mineral oil (8012951), and cresylic-acid (1319773) at the Keystone Diesel Engine Company (SIC-3519), in Wexford, Pennsylvania, on July 28, 1981. A representative of the International Association of Machinists and Automotive Workers, Local 1060, requested the evaluation on behalf of two affected workers. Methylene-chloride concentrations ranged from none detected to 27 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/Cum), below the NIOSH standard of 261 mg/Cum. No hydrogen- chloride, sodium-hydroxide, mineral-oil, or cresylic-acid was detected. Environmental criteria for these chemicals are 7 mg/Cum, 2 mg/Cum, 5 mg/Cum, and 22 mg/Cum, respectively. The author concludes that a health hazard from the tested chemicals did not exist at this facility. He recommends worker education and training, good personal hygiene and work practices, and the proper marking of all containers that contain chemicals.
