Description:

Noise exposures to ground crew operators were determined at Frontier Airlines Incorporated (SIC-4511) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on July 14, 1981. A representative of the airlines requested the evaluation on behalf of five affected workers. No noise levels exceeded the OSHA standard of 90 decibels on the A-weighted scale (dBA) at the various ground crew jobs evaluated. Peak noise levels for the various jobs and locations around the aircraft ranged from 93 to 110dBA for Frontier's Convair 580 turbo prop aircraft and 90 to 98dBA for Frontier's Boeing 737 aircraft. Excessive noise was found to be distributed over a wide frequency range with the highest levels between 250 and 4000 Hertz for both types of aircraft evaluated. All workers were wearing either ear plugs or muffs which are rated to reduce noise levels to below 85dBA. The authors conclude that a health hazard from excessive noise levels did not exist at this air terminal. They recommend the continuation of the current hearing protection program, routine noise monitoring, use of appropriate hearing protective equipment, and the implementation of an educational program regarding noise exposure hazards.
