Description:Environmental air samples were analyzed for Ordram (2212671), and for caprolactam (105602), hexamethyleneimine (111499), and total mercaptans at the Pacific Gas and Electric Western Canal Company (SIC-071) in Nelson, California, on June 16 to 18, 1980, and on May 14 to 17, 1981. A representative of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1245, requested the evaluation on behalf of the ten affected workers. During a preliminary evaluation conducted in June, 1980, Ordram application methods and employee work practices were observed. No samples were analyzed. The follow up survey performed during May, 1981, revealed a trace of Ordram of 8 parts per billion in one area sample. There are no current exposure standards for this herbicide. None of the other tested chemicals were detected in any of the samples. An epidemiological questionnaire administered to discern any reproductive difficulties among the 10 exposed workers gave no indications of reproductive problems related to their work. The authors conclude that a health hazard from Ordram exposure did not exist among these workers. They recommend that the workers continue good work practices, and that they report any improperly placed or undisposed drums containing Ordram.
