Description:Environmental air samples were analyzed for organic vapors, airborne bacteria and fungi, and a medical survey was conducted at Dell Rube Chenilles (SIC-2272) in Dalton, Georgia on February 21, 1980, and on February 25, 1981. The company Office Manager requested the evaluation after two employees had become ill with severe respiratory symptoms. Ethyl-alcohol (64175), ethyl-acetate (141786), methyl-isobutyl-ketone (108101) and biphenyl (92524) were identified in air samples, but all concentrations detected were less than 5 percent of concentrations expected to cause adverse health effects. Several airborne species of fungi were detected and a needle lubricant on sewing machines was found to contain bacteria. Two workers were diagnosed as probably having industrial asthma and one of them possibly allergic alveolitis. No reports of serious work-related health complaints were received during interviews with the employees. The authors conclude that there was no health hazard present at this facility and that the cause of the respiratory problems that two employees had experienced was not determined. They recommend improved personal hygiene practices for workers and the identification and reassignment of workers with allergy problems.
