Description:Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed for styrene (100425), epichlorohydrin (106898), dimethylaniline (1300738) (DMA), benzoyl-peroxide (94360) (BPO), and nuisance particulate matter at A. O. Smith Inland, Incorporated (SIC-3079), in Little Rock, Arkansas, on December 3 to 5, 1979. Medical interviews with affected workers were also conducted. An unidentified individual requested the evaluation on behalf of 25 affected production workers. Styrene concentrations ranged from 4.2 to 123.0 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/CuM), compared with the OSHA standard of 420 mg/CuM. Epichlorhydrin concentrations were all below the limits of detection. The OSHA standard for epichlorohydrin is 19mg/CuM. Benzoyl-peroxide concentrations ranged from none detected to 0.10 mg/CuM, below the OSHA standard of 5.0mg/CuM. No DMA concentrations were detected. The OSHA standard for DMA is 25mg/CuM. Nuisance particulate matter ranged from 0.1 to 2.0mg/CuM, below the OSHA standard of 10mg/CuM. Sixteen of the 25 employees interviewed reported intermittent mucous membrane irritation, headaches, somnolence, on nausea, but no specific cause for the symptoms could be determined. No significant abnormalities were found in the complete blood counts or liver enzyme tests performed on the 25 workers. The authors conclude that no health hazard from the sampled chemicals or particulate matter existed at this facility. They recommend modification of the existing ventilation system to control air leakage from the production area, periodic maintenance of fume exhaust equipment, and the employment of good work practices.
