  Environmental and personal air samples were analyzed for hydrogen- chloride (7647010), carbon-monoxide (630080), methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933), and tetrahydrofuran (109999), at a roofing site (SIC-1761) in Miami, Florida, on August 19 and 20, 1981. The Director of Safety and Health, United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers requested the evaluation on behalf of six affected workers. Hydrogen-chloride concentrations ranged from none detected to 10 parts per million (ppm) compared with the OSHA standard of 5ppm. Carbon-monoxide concentrations ranged from none detected to about 5ppm, below the NIOSH standard of 35ppm. One sample for methyl- ethyl-ketone was 1ppm, and one sample for tetrahydrofuran was 2ppm. The NIOSH standard for both chemicals is 200ppm. The author concludes that a health hazard from the sampled substances did not exist at this worksite. He recommends the use of appropriate respiratory protection equipment and worker education.
