Description:Personal air samples were analyzed for 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556), n-Butanol (71363), and perchloroethylene (127184), at the King Smith Printing Company (SIC-2752) on July 28, 1981. A representative of the Graphic Arts International Union, Local 289, requested the evaluation on behalf of one affected worker. 1,1,1- Trichloroethane concentrations ranged from none detected to 67 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/CuM), less than the NIOSH standard of 1910mg/CuM. n-Butanol concentrations ranged from 9.7 to 13mg/CuM , compared with the OSHA standard of 300mg/CuM. Concentrations of perchloroethylene were in the range of 22 to 30mg/CuM, below the OSHA standard of 670mg/CuM. The author concludes that a health hazard from solvents exposures did not exist at this facility. He recommends the use of gloves, reduction of perchloroethylene concentrations, and periodic environmental monitoring of the work area.
