Description:Bulk samples of rosin and levulinic-acid (123762) were analyzed, medical records reviewed, and medical questionnaires distributed to workers at the Jefferson Electric Company (SIC-3612) in Williamstown, Kentucky on May 27, 1980. Unidentified workers requested the evaluation after an incident involving about 20 workers being exposed to toxic fumes during overheating of a wax, rosin flux, and levulinic mixture. Analysis of the rosin flux bulk indicated that its major component was n-butanol (71363). Worker’s symptoms resulting from the exposure included adverse effects on mucous membranes, upper and lower respiratory tract, skin, central nervous system and gastrointestinal and urinary tracts. The authors conclude that the reported symptoms were consistent with the known toxic effects of n-butanol exposure but note that the process which caused the creation of n-butanol has been discontinued.
