  Possible health hazards in office facilities of the National Institute of Mental Health (SIC-9100) in Rockville, Maryland were evaluated. The survey was requested by the Institute and was conducted on February 18, 1982. Area air samples were collected for volatile organic compounds, and carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO), formaldehyde (50000), and ozone (10028156) concentrations were measured. Temperature, humidity, and illumination were surveyed. Twenty employees filled out questionnaires. Employees complained of eye and skin irritation, sinus congestion, metallic taste, and headaches. No ozone or formaldehyde was detected, but CO was present at 3 parts per million (ppm) compared to a NIOSH standard of 35ppm. Higher chain alkanes concentration was about 3.5 milligrams per cubic meter. The average temperature and humidity were 74 degrees-F and 24 percent. Some employee symptoms may have been related to low humidity. Illumination ranged from 70 to 100 footcandles. The author concludes that no health hazards due to the suspected contaminants existed at the time of this survey and suggests a ventilation survey to determine the adequacy of air flow.
