  Exposures to formaldehyde (50000) from urea formaldehyde foam insulation were investigated on July 28 to 30, 1982 at William Blount High School (SIC-8211) in Maryville, Tennessee. The evaluation was requested by the Tennessee Department of Public Health following on outbreak of skin discoloration and other symptoms among the students. Interviews were conducted with three students who had visited a hematologist, and two biopsy samples were obtained. Interviews also were conducted with 31 other individuals. Area air and bulk insulation samples were analyzed for formaldehyde. Long term airborne formaldehyde concentrations ranged from 0.2 to 0.17 parts per million (ppm), and short-term concentrations ranged from 0.01ppm to 0.11ppm. NIOSH recommends that exposure be kept to the lowest feasible limit. The insulation samples did not contain volatile organic compounds. No consistent pattern of symptoms or predominant problems were identified among the interviewed individuals. The authors conclude that no formaldehyde exposure hazard exists at the school.
