Description:

The ventilation system at the North Pocono High School (SIC-8211), Moscow, Pennsylvania, was evaluated for correlation with reported dizziness, headaches, sore throats, and other symptoms. A school employee requested the study which was performed on October 14, 1981. Ventilation studies were conducted in the library and in classrooms above the library. Temperature and relative humidity were measured. A mold growth sample was sent out for analysis. Ventilation measurements showed greater than 10 changes per hour in the areas studied. However, uncomfortably high temperatures (greater than 78 degrees-C), and low humidity (less than 40 percent), were noted. The mold was identified as Penicillium- chrysogenum. The author concludes that no significant health hazard exists in the library and classrooms above the library. Recommendations are made on humidity, temperature, and fresh air conditions to prevent future problems.
