Description:Worker exposures to formaldehyde (50000) were surveyed on June 30 and July 21, 1982, at Olympic Peninsula Kidney Center (SIC-8071) in Bremerton, Washington. The company management requested the investigation on behalf of seven employees. Breathing zone and general area air samples were analyzed. Employees were also questioned about medical complaints. Formaldehyde exposures generally ranged from 0.04 to 0.12 parts per million (ppm); however, for the employee responsible for flushing the artificial kidney, formaldehyde exposures were as high as 1.75ppm. NIOSH recommends that exposure be kept to the lowest feasible limit. The artificial kidney worker reported eye and nose irritation when refilling the 20-liter carboy with formaldehyde. The author concludes that a formaldehyde hazard exists at this laboratory. He recommends improved engineering controls and worker education about formaldehyde exposure.
