Description:The potential health effects of a new radiofrequency heat sealing machine were investigated. The request for technical assistance came from an unspecified person at the Taylor Lock Company (SIC- 3429), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after workers had complained of dizziness and headaches when working at the machine. Measurements of exposure were conducted on January 25, 1982. The electric field strengths ranged from 2500 to 169000 volts squared per square meter compared to an OSHA standard of 40000 volts squared per square meter. The magnetic field strength ranged from 0.0032 to 0.482 Amperes squared per square meter compared to an OSHA standard of since radiofrequency radiation exceeded OSHA standards, there is a radiation hazard at the unloading end of the machine. Recommendations are provided to reduce the radiofrequency radiation exposure to the worker at this station.
