Description:Exposure to polychlorinated-biphenyls (PCBs) after burnout of a fluorescent lamp ballast at the Hamilton County Health Department (SIC-9310), Cincinnati, Ohio was evaluated. The county Health Commissioner requested the study which was performed on December 3, 1981. Airborne PCBs were measured, and the presence of PCBs on surfaces was determined from wipe samples. Only Aroclor-1254 (11097691) was found, at 0.5 and 0.6 micrograms per 100 square centimeters. No detectable concentration of PCBs was found in the air sample. The author concludes that burnout of the fluorescent lamp ballast did not present a health hazard to the persons working in this office and suggests replacing ballasts with thermally protected units.
