Description:Exposure to diesel engine exhaust at Regional Transportation District bus facilities, (SIC-4172) East Metro, Platte, and Alameda, Denver, Colorado were determined on March 22 to 25, 1982. A representative of the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1001, requested the evaluation for an unspecified number of employees. Components of diesel exhaust were sampled in work areas. Aldehyde and sulfur-dioxide (7446095) concentrations were less than 0.03 and (630080) concentrations were 3 to 21ppm except in the Alameda bus storage area during the morning when it reached 170ppm. Particulates averaged 0.12 to 0.55 milligrams per cubic meter but were higher during the morning. Nitrogen-oxide (10102439) concentrations were 0.33 to 5.62ppm during the morning. Nitrogen- dioxide (10102440) concentrations in the morning in bus storage areas were 1.06ppm (East Metro), 1.29ppm (Platte), and 0.16ppm (Alameda). They reached 1.01ppm in the diesel repair area. Six samples collected during this period exceeded NIOSH recommended criteria of 1ppm/15 minute period. Of the diesel exhausts, only nitrogen-dioxide exceeded criteria. The author concludes that bus drivers (East Metro and Platte) and diesel mechanics (Alameda) are exposed to nitrogen-dioxide in excess of NIOSH criteria. Recommendations are improved ventilation systems and work practices.
