Description:A reported excess incidence of heart attacks at AquaChem, Incorporated, (SIC-3559) Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was investigated. The survey resulted from a confidential request and was performed in June and December, 1980. Personal and area air samples were taken to monitor welding fume exposure. Ultraviolet radiation and sodium vapor lamp luminance were determined. Medical, work and smoking histories were compiled for 52 workers. Exposures were cadmium (7440439) 0.00 to 0.05 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), with 4 percent exceeding the criteria (0.04mg/m3)
chromium, (7440473) 0.01 to 2.3mg/m3, 20 percent (0.25mg/m3)
copper (7440508) 0.00 to 1.8mg/m3, 20 percent (0.1mg/m3)
iron (7439896) 0.03 to 7.4mg/m3, 4 percent (5mg/m3)
magnesium (7439954) 0.00 to 0.03mg/m3, 0 percent (0.015mg/m3)
manganese (7439965) 0.00 to 1.6mg/m3, 4 percent (1mg/m3)
nickel (7440020) 0.01 to 1.4mg/m3, 28 percent (0.015mg/m3)
and carbon-monoxide (630080) 20 to 42 parts per million (ppm) with 17 percent exceeding the criteria (40ppm). Luminance quantity (exposure guideline: 500 Lux) exceeded the guideline. Symptoms were wheezing, and metal fume fever. No unusual incidence of cardiovascular disease was noted
chest tightness was associated with metal fume fever. The authors conclude that exposure to welding fumes may have caused metal fume fever. No health effects from sodium vapor lighting are seen.
