Description:An evaluation of health effects from exposure of firefighters (SIC- 9224) in Poughkeepsie, New York, to an explosion and fire at a chemical facility was performed. The study was requested by the International Association of Fire Fighters and was conducted for 2 weeks following the fire on January 14, 1982. Blood samples were collected from 67 firefighters divided into high, medium, light, or no exposure groups, to determine injury to vital organs (SMA-24). Methemoglobin analyses were done to assess exposures to p- nitroaniline (100016), which was believed to have been at the fire site. Decontamination practices for firefighters' uniforms were reviewed. No methemoglobinemia nor abnormal SMA-24 results were detected that could be attributed to contaminant exposure from the fire. Because it was not feasible to determine the degree and kind of contamination to the uniforms, disposal was recommended. The authors conclude that there are no apparent systemic health effects due to exposure to chemicals at the fire. The decontamination of uniforms is impractical
therefore they should be disposed of properly.
