Description:A health hazard evaluation for organic vapors and ionizing radiation was conducted at Fordham University (SIC-8221), Lincoln Center, New York because of concern about increased cancer incidence. The university's administration requested the survey which was conducted on October 7, 1981. Sampling was performed for carbon-dioxide (124389) (CO2), carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO), formaldehyde (50000), organic vapors, and acidic gases. Ionizing radiation was measured. Previously reported medical findings of the New York State Department of Health were evaluated. The concentrations of CO2 ranged from 300 to 500 parts per million (ppm) compared to an OSHA standard of 1000ppm, and CO concentrations ranged from 2 to 5ppm, compared to the 35ppm standard. No formaldehyde nor significant organic vapors were detected. Ionizing radiation was found to be at normal background. The authors conclude that no health hazard exists in the survey area and there is no excess of malignant disorders among the workers.
