  The possible health hazards of poor ventilation and odors at the Cincinnati Income Tax Bureau (SIC-9311), Cincinnati, Ohio were evaluated. The Tax Commissioner requested the study, which was performed between October 26, 1981, and November 12, 1981. The facility employed 65 persons. Odor characteristics were determined after employee interview. Passive microbial sampling of the air was performed. The ventilation system was evaluated, and temperature and humidity were measured. No single odor source was identified, and microbial sampling revealed no organisms other than those normally associated with areas of human habitation. Temperature was 76 degrees-F, and humidity was measured at 28 percent and 48 percent, compared to a recommended range of 45 to 60 percent. Fresh air intake was found to be inadequate and there were no active means of exchanging air. The author concludes that no specific source of odors is detectable but recommends evaluation of air supply since fresh air intake, air exchange, and air return are inadequate.
