  Worker exposure to hazardous chemicals and radiation generated by visual display terminals (VDT) was investigated in the newspaper composing room of the New York Post (SIC-2711), New York, New York. About 150 people work in the composing room including 40 who are directly involved in developing photographs. The study was requested by an employee representative and was performed on June 6, 1980, and January 12, 1981. A walk-through survey examined potential chemical exposures. The major potential hazard was a result of exposures during photographic development. Skin contact with acids and bases could cause dermatitis. The use of gloves and good personal hygiene seemed adequate to prevent this. X-rays emitted by the VDTs were not above background values. No magnetic fields or ultraviolet radiation were found. The authors conclude that no health hazards from photographic chemicals or from VDT radiation exists at the site.
