Description:Exposures to fuel and exhaust fumes were investigated. The General Manager for Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District (SIC-4111) requested the investigation which was performed on September 23 to 25, 1981. The manager was concerned about complaints of eye and upper respiratory irritation reported by about 25 bus drivers. Peak carbon-monoxide (630080) concentrations for gasoline powered buses averaged 6 parts per million (ppm) and peak total hydrocarbons average 3ppm. The NIOSH standards are 35ppm for carbon-monoxide and 350 milligram per cubic meter for alkanes C5 to C8. For diesel engine buses, carbon-dioxide (124389), nitrogen-dioxides (10102440), and sulfur-dioxides (7446095) concentrations were below the limit of the detection. No formaldehyde (50000) was detected. Total soot ranged from nondetectable to 0.06 milligrams per cubic meter. For 17 bus drivers, there was no significant difference between preshift and postshift carboxyhemoglobin concentration. The authors conclude that drivers were not overexposed to raw fuel and exhaust fume pollutants. Symptoms reported by the drivers were consistent with either intermittent diesel fume exposure or intermittent uncombusted gasoline vapor exposure.
