  A jeweler who operated a shop (SIC-3911, SIC-3961) in his basement in Novato, California requested NIOSH assistance concerning the storage and handling of chemicals, the effectiveness of the existing ventilation system, and an analysis of talc (14807966) samples for potential asbestos (1332214) contamination. An initial survey was conducted on June 8 with a follow-up on July 27, 1981. No asbestos was found in the five bulk samples that were analyzed. In several samples, quartz (14808607) or cristobalite (14464461) were found. The jeweler was exposed to metal fumes during metal casting. The local exhaust hood used to control talc exposure appeared to work properly. The canopy exhaust hood used to control chemical vapor was not effective. The author concludes that the worker is being exposed during casting and electropolishing. He suggests that the local exhaust hood used to control chemical vapor was not effective, that local exhaust ventilation should be installed to collect metal fumes, side shields should be added to the canopy hood to increase collection efficiency, and similar chemicals should be stored together to reduce the hazards caused by breakage or spillage.
