Description:Exposures to 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556) (TCE) were investigated on March 30, 1982, at Goodyear Aerospace Corporation (SIC-3728), Akron, Ohio. Evaluation was requested by a representative of the United Auto Workers, Local 859, for 21 employees in the Antiskid Manufacturing Area. Air samples were collected, medical records were reviewed, and employees completed medical questionnaires. Concentrations of TCE in general and personal air samples ranged from 3.3 to 5.1 parts per million (ppm) compared to the OSHA standard of 350ppm. NIOSH recommends that exposure be kept at the lowest feasible limit due to potential carcinogenicity of TCE. Very low concentrations of methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933), toluene (108883), and cellosolve-acetate (111159) were detected. Poor hygiene and work practices resulted in potential exposure hazards. The Antiskid Area workers reported dizziness, headaches, and mucous membrane irritation. After use of a Freon degreaser had been discontinued in February 1982, symptom frequency decreased sharply. The authors conclude that no health hazard existed at the time of the survey, but probably did exist before February 1982 when the Freon degreaser was used. They recommend improved exhaust systems, relocation of the Freon degreaser in future use, protective gloves, and improved work hygiene.
