Description:Worker exposures to chemicals used in the production of electric lamps were investigated on April 6 to 8, 1982 at GTE Products Corporation (SIC-3641), in Winchester, Kentucky. The evaluation was requested by the company management on behalf of an unspecified number of workers. Personal and area air samples were collected, and employees completed a medical questionnaire. Exposures to methyl- alcohol (67561), and sulfur-dioxide (7446095) exceeded the NIOSH limits of 260 milligrams per cubic meter and 0.5 parts per million, respectively. Concentrations of isopropyl-alcohol (67630), methyl- iodide (74884), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (7446095), methyl-bromide (74839), and hydrogen-sulfide were either undetectable or well below exposure standards. Three of eight surveyed workers reported fatigue, headache, and sinus trouble associated with the work environment. The author concludes that exposure hazards to methyl- alcohol and sulfur-dioxide exist at this facility. He recommends the use of respirators, improved ventilation, environmental monitoring, and an epidemiologic assessment of the heart attack rate.
