  Worker exposures to solvents were investigated on July 14 and August 18 and 19, at Downing Displays, Inc. (SIC-3993) in Cincinnati, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by a company representative on behalf of three silk screening workers. Long and short-term personal air samples were collected to determine exposures to solvents contained in the image and paint remover solutions. Workers completed medical symptom questionnaires. None of the exposures exceeded the threshold limit value for mixed solvents. Exposures to the individual components of the solutions were also well below evaluation criteria. Workers did not consistently use protective clothing or equipment. Reported symptoms included headache, lethargy, sinus problems, nausea, and heart burn. The author concludes that no airborne solvent exposure hazard exists. Overall exposure may be increased due to skin absorption of the solvents. The author recommends the use of protective equipment and clothing, improved housekeeping, and worker education.
