Description:Exposures to toluene (108883) and epichlorohydrin (106898) (ECM) were investigated on May 12 and 13, 1982 at Morton Chemical (SIC- 286) in New Iberia, Louisiana. Evaluation was requested by three employees for 90 workers who produced uncured epoxy resin and tebuthiuron, (34014181). Personal and general area air samples were analyzed for toluene and ECM. Area air samples were also tested for cresol (1319773) and formaldehyde (50000). Workers completed medical questionnaires, examinations, and urine tests. Concentrations of toluene and ECM were below NIOSH limits of 375 and 2 milligrams per cubic meter, respectively. None of the samples contained cresol or formaldehyde. Dermatitis and chemical burns were seen in 27 percent of the 81 workers examined. Among workers with hypertension, mean age at first detection was 32 years for production workers and 55 years for nonproduction workers. Urinary hippuric-acid excretion indicated greater toluene exposure among production workers. Symptoms of headache, sore throat, drowsiness, and sinus problems did not correlate to toluene exposure. The authors conclude that no exposure hazards exist. They recommend use of protective gloves to changes in work practices, blood pressure monitoring, and engineering controls.
