Description:Reports of respiratory and skin irritation were investigated at Michigan State University's Purchasing Department (SIC-8221) in East Lansing, Michigan on March 23, 1981. The evaluation was requested by a representative of the University's Center for Environmental Toxicology for the department's 24 workers. Air samples were analyzed for fibrous glass; bulk samples were analyzed for asbestos (1332214). Workers completed medical and occupational history questionnaires. On a followup survey, the possibility of an exhaust air curling effect was investigated. Several workers were given physical examinations. Fibrous glass concentrations were below the detection limit of 4500 fibers per filter. No asbestos was found, and no analytical detection limit exposure standard was given. Workers reported eye and skin irritation, headache, nasal congestion, and fatigue. The followup survey was inconclusive about a curling effect, and did not reveal any additional medical abnormalities. The author concludes that no hazardous exposures exist at this facility. Workers' complaints may be due to problems with the building's heating system. He recommends evaluation of the heating unit, addition of a central humidification system, and improved ventilation.
