Description:Exposures to photographic and sculpturing chemicals were investigated on May 11 and 12, 1982 at classrooms of the Art Department of Columbia College (SIC-8221) in Columbia, Missouri. The evaluation was requested by a representative of the department on behalf of the students and faculty. Area and personal breathing zone air samples from the photography classroom were analyzed for 2- ethoxyethanol (110805) (2-EE) and p-toluene-sulfonic-acid (104154) (pTSA). The sculpturing classroom was sampled for styrene (100425) and methyl-ethyl-ketone-peroxide (1338234) (MEKP). 2-EE and pTSA were not detected in photography room samples. In sculpturing room samples, MEKP was not detected. Styrene concentrations ranged from is 200ppm
no NIOSH standard is given. The author concludes that no hazardous exposures exist. He suggests that previously reported respiratory symptoms among the students were due to a mixture of substances used for film developing. He recommends use of protective clothing, improved ventilation, and improved personal and workplace hygiene.
